Summary:
Under the directive of the Manager/Director, The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor coordinates the daily activities of staff in the Blood Bank.
The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor supervises the on-going technical operations of the section and ensures the validity and accuracy of test results.
Coordinates staff, materials and equipment needs.
The Supervisor plans, organizes, schedules, and directs the department in order to effectively utilize employees and equipment to meet established turnaround time and material utilization within budgetary constraints while adhering to quality technical standards.
The Supervisor provides direct on-site analysis of the day to day operation including adjustment of specimen workflow, test performance, quality, compliance, and associated documentation to adhere to the applicable regulatory agencies, company policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
Supervises Blood Bank staff, including training, discipline.
Authorizes overtime as needed to ensure efficient workflow and adequate coverage.
Responsible for ongoing evaluation of job performance.
Responsible for scheduling of staff and ensuring appropriate coverage of the blood bank 24/7.
Oversees timely filling of all transfusion requests.
Prepare blood or blood products for patient use and reports to Blood Bank Director on a timely basis related to technical and professional problems.
Ensures compliance with AABB, FDA, CAP, DNV and Department of Health Standards for blood according to usage and projected need.
Develops Standard Operating Procedures for the Blood Bank.
Proficient in the review of blood bank testing; specifically, antibody workups and provide guide to technologists on approach to resolve the serological investigation.
Monitors supplies of reagents, and lab supplies to ensure adequacy at all times.
Maintains adequate inventory levels of blood products and initiates steps to increase or decrease quantities as necessary.
Removes expired blood products on a timely basis with proper record keeping.
Performs periodic quality control checks on equipment.
Reviews daily quality control performed by others on items including freezers, refrigerators, centrifuges, incubators, worksheets, and computer review.
Actively assist in in-service education of the staff.
Ability to participate in quality management operation of the lab.
Demonstrate knowledge of Blood Banking/transfusion ServicesDemonstrates the ability to monitor the quality control and all other quality performance standards and policy procedures followed in the lab.
Develops and teaches new testing and other lab procedures to subordinates, other lab techs and new employees.
Consults with the pathologists and lab administrator on difficult, unusual and other daily operational procedures.
Coordinates daily laboratory operations as per safety standards of the lab.
Proficient and competent in all blood bank testing.
Provide coverage as a technologist when needed.
Assuring that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratories established performance specificationsIn the event of non conformances, ensuring that result of test examinations are not reported until corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
Verifying that staff are trained and competent prior to performing testing on ptient specimens independently and,Verifying that testing personnel are evaluated semiannually during the first year of hire, and thereafter annually, as being competent for assigned tasks and that the remedial action is performed when staff do not perform as expected.
Performs related duties, as required.
Minimum Qualifications (required vs.
preferred):
Experience:
Minimum of six (6) years' experience as a licensed NYS clinical laboratory technologist required.
Prior supervisory experience, preferredEducation:
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related degree, required.
Licenses / Certifications:
Licensed by New York State Education Department (NYSED) as a Clinical Laboratory TechnologistPossess excellent communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently in a time sensitive environment.
Ability to perform accurately and consistently under high stress.
Computer literacy and familiarity with the operation of basic office softwareSpecial Requirements:
Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
May assist with the training and orientation of new employees and clinical students from various departments and external institutions.
Performs other related duties as assigned or required as professional Laboratory Supervisor.
